SARGO
Diplodus sargus
The bream is a fish with a very flat oval body, silver in color with a black spot at the root of its tail and above the eyes. Their mouth has thick lips and some individuals have dark vertical bands on the upper part of their body, especially when they are young. Its length ranges from 15 to 30 centimeters.
This fish is found mainly in coastal areas, inhabiting rocks and areas where waves break, and it is uncommon to find them at depths greater than 50 meters. They feed on rock-dwelling organisms, small invertebrates, sea urchins, starfish, algae.
In addition to its gastronomic value, the bream is a fish that also has an important ecological value. As a predatory species, it participates in the regulation of the populations of other invertebrate species in the marine ecosystem. It is also an important indicator of ecosystem health, as its presence and abundance can indicate water quality and food availability in the area.
