Horse mackerel
Trachurus trachurus
This fish has an elongated and fusiform body, bluish-green on the back and silver on the flanks and belly. It also has a high dorsal fin and a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin. It can reach up to 60 cm in length and its maximum recorded weight is 3.5 kg.
The jack mackerel is a gregarious fish that moves in large schools and is capable of swimming at high speeds, which allows it to migrate long distances in search of food. It is a very hardy and adaptable fish found in waters of different temperatures, from southern Norway to North Africa.
This fish inhabits coastal and oceanic waters, and is found both at the surface and at depths of up to 200 meters. It prefers rocky areas, sandy bottoms and can sometimes approach the coast in search of food. Their diet is based mainly on small crustaceans, mollusks and other smaller fish.
