Pagellus bogaraveo

The blackmouth is a fish with a robust, laterally compressed body, a large head and a mouth with strong, sharp teeth. Its coloration varies from dark gray to reddish brown, with a black spot at the base of the pectoral fin. It can reach a length of up to 70 cm and a weight of 3 kg.

The blackmouth is a demersal fish that inhabits rocky and sandy bottoms, as well as Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds. It is commonly found in shallow waters, from the coast up to 50 meters deep.

How to Eat

The flesh of the bocanegra is white and firm, with a sweet and delicate flavor. It is a lean meat, low in fat and high in protein. It is a highly appreciated meat in Mediterranean cuisine, especially in Spain, where it is used in a wide variety of dishes.
